Galway Bay fm newsroom – A city councillor is calling for urgent action to be taken over the dumping of oils and fats into city waterways.
Councillor Niall McNelis says there’s been a marked increase in waste, oils, grease and fats in the Claddagh Basin in particular.
He believes it’s quite clear the waste is being dumped and travels in the water through the Eglington canal.
He claims a boon that was in place at Ravens Terrace has disappeared in the last few days, allowing the waste to enter the Claddagh basin.

St Patrick’s festival is being marked with an illuminated gleoiteog in Galway’s Claddagh basin this week.
The gleoiteog Manuela has been decorated with lights by Bádóirí an Cladaig, the city association dedicated to training and restoration of the traditional craft.
The vessel was named in memory of Manuela Riedo, the Swiss student who was raped and murdered in Galway in October 2007
In its recent publication, Wastewater Treatment in Galway, An Taisce reminded us that until the wastewater treatment plant on Mutton Island came into operation in 2004, this city had historically allowed 6,000,000 litres of untreated raw sewage a day to flow out into Galway Bay, a Special Area of Conservation.
