ALTON The Alton School District, for the time being, is returning to some sense of normalcy.
In a letter to students and parent on Thursday, Alton Superintendent Kristie Baumgartner announced that the school district will provide in-person instruction five days a week starting Monday, March 15, the start of district’s 4th quarter.
“While we continue to monitor our regional and local COVID-19 metrics, the consistent and continued improvement of our community and school district health over the past month currently supports our plan to increase the number of days offered,” Baumgartner said.

ALTON During the Alton school board meeting Tuesday, board member Vivian Monckton was presented with a Those Who Excel award from the Illinois State Board of Education.
Monckton said she was surprised to receive the award, but remained humble about the recognition.
“I don’t feel I contribute more than any of a number of volunteers in our district,” she said. “The Alton district is blessed with great staff, parents, administrators and volunteers and we work well together.”
Monckton has been on the school board since 1999. Before that, she served in many volunteer positions. She was also the president of the Alton Athletic Association and the Alton Band and Orchestra Builders.
