There’s a common assumption that once consumers go for an electric car, they’re there for good. And in fact, that’s mostly true, and we can attest from having regular contact with EVs that it’s pretty easy to be won over by the advantages they offer.
However, the reality is not necessarily the same for everyone, and it can vary depending on where you are in North America. The situation is certainly not the same in Quebec as it is in Alberta, for example, just as it is certainly different for a resident of California than for someone in Montana.

Roughly 20 percent of electric vehicle owners in California replaced their cars with gas ones, a new UC Davis study shows.
The main reason drivers made the switch was the inconvenience of charging according to the study.
The study’s findings suggest new challenges facing the growth of the EV market, though much of the research is up to nine years old.

UC Davis study finds discontinuance rate of 21% for California PHEV adopters, 19% for BEV adopters
Discontinuance is the term applied to the abandoning of a new technology by someone who was once an adopter or user. A new study by Scott Hardman and Gil Tal at the University of California, Davis has found that discontinuance occurs at a rate of 21% for California plug-in hybrid adopters and 19% for California battery electric vehicle adopters.
Hardman and Tal surveyed 4167 plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) owners in California. Of the 1856 responses who reached a decision point on PEV ownership, 20.96% discontinued ownership. Of those:
24.3% of those that discontinued BEV ownership are unlikely to purchase a BEV in the future;
