A pair of researchers with the Institute of Transportation Studies at the University of California, Davis has looked into the problem of some people who buy electric vehicles reverting back to gasoline powered cars as their follow-up vehicles. In their paper published in the journal
Nature Energy, Scott Hardman and Gil Tal describe the survey they sent out to electric vehicle buyers in California and what they learned from those who filled out and returned them.

Owners were 20 percent more likely to go back to gas-powered cars if they owned a hybrid plug-in car.
Co-authors Scott Hardman and Gil Tal detail owners’ reasons for switching back in the Nature Energy journal. Here, on the basis of results from five questionnaire surveys, we find that PEV discontinuance in California occurs at a rate of 20% for plug-in hybrid electric vehicle owners and 18% for battery electric vehicle owners. We show that discontinuance is related to dissatisfaction with the convenience of charging, having other vehicles in the household that are less efficient, not having level 2 (240-volt) charging at home, having fewer household vehicles and not being male.

In sprawling Southern California, known for its car culture, it seems like there’s a gas station on every corner. But that might not be true much longer.
Last year, Governor Gavin Newsom banned the sale of new gas-powered cars in California by 2035.
“I had more questions than answers. I was like what? I was like wow okay, that’s a bold statement,” says Porterville gas station owner Taha Saleh. “I’m for whatever will make our world more sustainable. . The only concern I have is, you know, my livelihood is a concern.”
