The Super Bowl ad landscape looked different this year as big names like Budweiser, halftime show sponsor Pepsi and Coke sat out their usual commercial buys and rethought how to best promote their brands during the coronavirus pandemic. But there was no shortage of creative and entertaining ads to watch as the NFL s Tampa Bay Buccaneers took on the reigning champs, the Kansas City Chiefs.

Sony/ATV landed a dozen synchs, followed by Warner Chappell and UMPG, during a game in which some major brands sat out.
If any Super Bowl ad summed up the past year for synch placements, it was the ScottsMiracle-Gro spot starring
John Travolta and his daughter,
Ella, recreating his iconic dance steps from
Grease in the backyard. It was Scotts first-ever ad for the big game, largely because the company gained 20 million customers during the pandemic, and it was an homage to TikTok, on which the underlying track, Surface s Sunday Best, went viral last summer.

TikTok users will hear a familiar voice among the Super Bowl commercials on Sunday Christian Shelton, the 19-year-old Las Vegas college student who has racked up millions of likes on the platform for his rousing covers of pop songs.
The job search firm Indeed.com recruited Shelton to sing his version of the inspirational Andra Day ballad “Rise Up” for a 60-second spot titled “The Rising” that depicts Americans hit by joblessness during the COVID-19 pandemic looking toward a brighter future.
“It’s a song of progress and getting past things and hope,” Shelton said by phone from his family’s suburban Las Vegas home. “I was so grateful to Indeed for reaching out.”
