Civil groups welcome Dáil motion on annexation of Palestinian lands Dáil has passed a Sinn Féin motion recognising Israel s illegal settlements as a de facto annexation Reporter:   ); Sadaka, Trócaire, Christian Aid Ireland and the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) have welcomed the passing of a motion in Dáil Éireann yesterday declaring that Israel’s settlement activity in the West Bank represents the unlawful de facto annexation of Palestinian land. The motion also noted that annexation of territory by force is a violation of a fundamental principle of international law. The groups said the passing of the motion is a meaningful and decisive statement from Ireland’s parliament demonstrating its commitment to international law.

Garvagh women to ‘walk with water’ Seven women from Garvagh are preparing to begin a 75 km walking challenge to highlight the impact of climate change on some of the world’s poorest people while raising funds for international development agency, Christian Aid Ireland. Friday, 7th May 2021, 2:42 pm The women, all of whom are volunteers at The Changing Room, Christian Aid’s charity shop in Garvagh, plan to cover the distance in stages during May while carrying buckets of water around the village and through the nearby forest. Their walk to mark Christian Aid Week is inspired by Rose Jonathan (68), a widowed grandmother from Kenya where severe drought and a changing climate mean that she must spend up to seven hours a day walking to fetch water for her family and livestock.

A string of charities have praised the support they received from Downpatrick businessman Denis Lynn, who died this week in a tragic accident. Mr Lynn, 63, was chairman of the Downpatrick based food company Finnebrogue Artisan which he built up from scratch and which now employs 1000 with a turnover last year of £100,000. There have been widespread tributes to him after his fatal accident in a quad bike accident on Sunday evening.
