A SIGNIFICANT number of people are realising they have made a mistake in getting a pet during the pandemic. When the UK was plunged into a national lockdown back in March 2020, the country ‘went wild’ for puppies due to the ‘perfect opportunity’. Pet Insurance company PetPlan surveyed over 2,000 pet owners in the UK and found that a quarter of them have regrets or concerns about taking ownership of a pet during lockdown. Over the course of the pandemic, a quarter of pet owners welcomed a new pet into their home, most commonly a dog (17%) and cat (12%). Of those who took ownership, almost 47% did so for the first time.

THE UK ‘went wild for puppies’ during the first national lockdown, but many have now realised they have ‘made a mistake’. Karen Boyce is the owner of Beastly Thoughts Professional Dog Services, the biggest puppy training organisation in Wales, and she said she saw a huge surge in people blindly buying puppies during the national lockdowns. However, many of these puppies, through no fault of their own, are now being put up for sale after families realised what it takes to manage a dog at home. She told the Leader: “I can remember it very clearly, it was practically the first day after lockdown back in March 2020 when I was rung by a vet who had decided to have a puppy. With lockdown she was going to be home much more frequently so was going to take the opportunity to obtain and raise the dog she had always wanted. She was looking to book puppy classes with me.

Suffolk s libraries are set for another period of closure following the announcement that the county is to move into Covid Tier 4.
Organisers have decided that library buildings will temporarily remain shut after the Christmas Bank Holiday.
The libraries were due to close on Christmas Eve and then reopen on Tuesday, December 29. They will instead stay closed until further notice into 2021.
Libraries are currently open for collecting items which have been pre-ordered or requested, and pre-booked computer appointments. These services will no longer be available after Christmas.
