Approximately one billion beauty products have launched since the first issue of Allure hit newsstands in 1991, but some are so classic, so nostalgic, we just can t part with them. For our 30th Anniversary, we re introducing
Allure Recommends to celebrate the beauty innovations we ve loved over the years and still use and cherish today.
Without fail, whenever there s a listicle or a meme carousel regarding kids and teens who grew up in the 1990s,
Caboodles makes a cameo. And as someone who indubitably qualifies as a 90s teen those were my middle-school-through-college years I can attest, Caboodles accompanied me along the way. Even when my budding makeup collection was nothing more than two CoverGirl Lipslicks and a Cheekers (if you know, you know), long before I could justify owning a case that holds dozens of beauty products, I decided I needed one. It was a rite of passage.
Tracee Ellis Ross is already an award-winning actor, fashion icon, and CEO of her own hair-care company, Pattern Beauty. But, of course, as someone dedicated to amplifying Black voices and Black culture, she isn t stopping there. The multi-hyphenate has a new role, signing on with
Ulta Beauty (the retailer that just so happens to carry her brand) as its new diversity and inclusion advisor â just in time for Black History Month. I look forward to formalizing an already existing dialogue and partnership around diversity and inclusion with [Ulta Beauty CEO] Mary Dillon and the Ulta Beauty team, says Ellis Ross in a press release. This work requires commitment and accountability from Ulta Beauty to ensure measurable goals are achieved. I am hopeful and optimistic our work together will create foundational change.
Jonathan Van Ness star of
Queer Eye, those adorable Uber Eats commercials, and life in general is launching his own hair-care line. We don t have much info about it yet (other than that it s happening under the same parent brand as Biossance s), probably because the products are still very much in development. In fact, JVN himself has been testing them.
Although he hasn t revealed very much about the ingredients, names, or packaging, we can confidently say that at least one product will be made specifically with curly hair in mind. We know this based on a couple of videos he posted to his Instagram Stories in which he was styling his hair and sharing the results. But as much as we want to know what he used, we also want more information on his hair-drying methods.
My favorite thing about Billie Eilish â besides her musical prowess, obviously â is that she never shows up to the party without headline-worthy nail art. I should know:
Allure has covered just about every manicure she s ever worn, including her recent bubble nail art, Gucci-branded nails, and black bejeweled claws from the 2020 Oscars. The same certainly goes for the singer s
Vanity Fair cover shoot, which was revealed by the magazine on January 25. For the career-defining occasion, Eilish wore not just one but two blindingly shiny nail looks. Because of course she did.
The manicures were done by Eilish s right-hand nail artist, Tammy Taylor, who revealed the products behind both looks on Instagram. The first, from the magazine s cover, features a shimmery champagne-colored nail polish on Billie s signature long and square-shaped fake nails, which peek out from a pair of paisley-patterned fingerless gloves. According to Taylor, she used two polishes from her eponym
For almost two years, a jumbo-sized Diptyque candle sat on a bookshelf in my living room completely untouched. I insisted I was saving it for a special occasion. This, of course, was ridiculous. Life is a special occasion. (And it s nothing if not unpredictable: I finally burned that candle during a days-long power outage.)
Several months into stay-at-home orders, I was reminded of this as my eyes danced over the bright lipsticks and colorful liners in my makeup collection that sat gathering dust. I could wait to wear them for a special occasion maybe my first day back at the office, or to one of many weddings postponed to late 2021 but. why? Instead, on a random Wednesday night, I poured myself a glass of red wine and reintroduced myself to my favorite eyeshadow palette. And fire-engine red lipstick and cream blush and a contouring palette. Because even if you have to stay inside, you can still go all out.
