A 13-hour standoff in Watauga County has come to an end.
Morganton Department of Public Safety Maj. Ryan Lander told The News Herald just before 11 p.m. that the suspect appears to have killed himself.
The man, whose name has not been released, is said to have killed a deputy during a welfare check at 553 Hardaman Circle in Boone around 9:44 a.m. Wednesday. Another deputy was inside of the home but his condition is unknown at this point.
Watauga County Sheriffâs Office Sgt. Chris Ward, who was shot when responding to the welfare check Wednesday morning, died after being airlifted to Johnson City Medical Center in Tennessee, according to information from WCSO sent to News Herald news partner Dave Faherty with WSOCTV.Â

The suspected shooter was still barricaded in the home, the Watauga County Sheriff s Office said Wednesday night.
Deputies responded to the home in Boone at around 9:44 a.m. after the homeowner s employer reported that the person had not reported to work or responded to phone calls, authorities said.
Standoff continues after one deputy killed and one wounded in North Carolina
One Watauga County sheriff’s deputy has been killed and another wounded in an ongoing standoff situation near Boone, North Carolina, officials said in a release sent on behalf of the Sheriff’s Office.
The Sheriff’s Office said a standoff with the suspected shooter is ongoing.
Sgt. Chris Ward, died after being flown to Johnson City Medical Center in Tennessee for treatment, according to the release that was prepared by the media relations staff at Appalachian State University. K-9 Deputy Logan Fox is still on the scene. His condition is unknown.

BOONE, N.C. (AP) A North Carolina sheriff’s deputy has died and another law-enforcement officer has been wounded in a shooting that prompted an hourslong standoff.
Watauga County Sheriff’s Sgt. Chris Ward was dispatched to a home in Boone at 9:44 a.m. after the homeowner and his family didn’t report to work or answer telephone calls, his office said in a news release. He entered the home with a colleague, and both were hit by gunfire.
