Australian stuck in India sues to overturn travel suspension
Gary Newman travelled to India to visit friends in March last year and has been unable to return.
The urgent application filed in federal court in Sydney will be held this afternoon.

Mr Newman is being represented by Michael Bradley and Chris Ward SC, who are working pro bono to overturn the travel suspension. The constitutionality of a proposed law criminalising return of Australian citizens from particular specified countries is deeply questionable, Dr Ward tweeted earlier this week.

WATAUGA COUNTY, N.C. (WBTV) - Sgt. Chris Ward and K-9 deputy Logan Fox stopped at a Watauga County home, just east of Boone, to check on the occupants.
They responded for a welfare check at the home on Hardaman Circle shortly before 10 a.m. April 28.
It was the final call as deputies with the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office.
Sgt. Ward and deputy Fox were shot before an hours-long standoff that lasted all day and into the night.

The virtual training simulator, called VirTra, is designed to help basic law enforcement training (BLET) students improve how they respond to an active shooter, domestic violence, and other high-stress situations. It offers more than 200 different real-life scenarios such as a movie theater, courthouse, or a school campus and includes three large screens for a 180-degree engaging training environment.
The ending outcomes of the scenarios depend upon the actions and statements taken by the officer in real time, with multiple responses from on-screen persons. The simulator recreates psychological stressors, like an elevated heart rate and high levels of adrenaline, that officers experience during the intensive training.

A 73-year-old Australian, who is stranded in India since March last year, has filed a lawsuit before a Sydney court against the federal government for banning flights from India and threatening to prosecute those attempting to enter the country with the possibility of a jail term and a penalty, saying the move is “unconstitutional”.
The lawyers of Gary Newman, who is stranded in Bengaluru since March last year, have argued in the federal court in Sydney that the ban was “unconstitutional”.
The Australian government, for the first time in history, recently imposed a ban on its citizens returning home if they have spent time in India up to 14 days before flying back.
