SAN DIEGO
A Pennsylvania man pleaded not guilty Tuesday in a case in which he is accused of strangling a young San Diego woman to death in 1969 a 51 year old case authorities say was solved with DNA evidence and forensic genealogy.
John Sipos, 75, of Lehigh County, is charged with murder in the death of Mary Scott, who was 23 years old and living alone when someone kicked in the door of her North Park apartment. Authorities say the assailant broke her jaw, raped and killed her.
If convicted, Sipos faces what he would have faced if he’d been charged at the time: 7 years to life in prison. He was not charged with rape, because the statute of limitations governing that charge ran out decades ago.
Scott failed to show up to her job at a club just blocks away from her home on Nov. 20, so a friend went to check on her. She found Scott laying in the middle of her living room, nude and unconscious.
Scott s sister Rosalie Sanz, who was only 16 at the time, remembers the night her family received the news.
“It was night and the doorbell rang, which was odd, Sanz said. “There were two men wearing suits at the door and I thought this can t be good.”
“I came out of my bedroom and I asked what happened and she [my mom] said ‘Mary was raped and strangled,” added Sanz.
