Old Smoke Band Finds Purpose, New Dynamic During Pandemic

Travis Wheet, Chris Lackey, Jess Wheet, Heath Brandon, and Adam Humphreys of Old Smoke taking a break from recording at Eclipse Studios in Normal. Like many bands, the Bloomington-based quintet Old Smoke used downtime during the pandemic to write and record a new album. The EP “Onward” is musically similar to Old Smoke’s 2018 rockin’-blues LP “In My Own Time.” But this time around, background singer Jessica Wheet moved to lead vocals. Guitarist and former lead singer Adam Humphreys said Wheet up-front changed the dynamic of the band for two reasons. “She has a huge range, so that changes the kinds of songs that we can do,” said Humphreys via Zoom.

New Bloomington Rock Band Finds Purpose During Pandemic

CAPS LOCK Singer/songwriter/guitarist Joe Borbely said creating the debut album for the Bloomington-based Progressive Space rock outfit CAPS LOCK was almost literally a life-saver. “This gave us something to work together,” said Borbely of staying active during the pandemic while dealing with other difficult life problems. “You know, this project was everything. I cannot understate that, like just it was the biggest thing.” The man best known musically for his role in the Twin Cities cover band Jack Dupp & the Empty Bottles dove head-first into writing what became most of the music and lyrics for the four-song EP “Higher Standard of Deviation” during the pandemic.
