Tributes to former Darlington councillor Tony Richmond

A FORMER town mayor and “proud Darlingtonian” who served on the council for more than 40 years has died. Tributes have been paid to former Conservative Darlington councillor Tony Richmond, who died on Wednesday at the age of 81. The father and grandfather, who was first elected in 1976, decided to step down from the council in 2019 due to ill health. Tony Richmond during his tenure as Darlington town mayor Wife Sue Richmond paid tribute to her husband as a “very proud Darlingtonian”. She added: “He was a lovely man. All he wanted was to be a good man.

Plea to save ground floor of closed Haddington pub and keep it for business use

Plans were revealed last month to transform the three-storey Gardeners Arms in the centre of Haddington. The historic venue, on the town’s Kilpair Street, dates back hundreds of years, with The Fraternity of Gardeners of East Lothian once based in the town. They purchased a property which contained an inn on the corner of Market Street. However, last orders may have been called at the pub, which has not been open for about three years. Flats would be created on each floor of the building under DSI Properties Ltd’s plans. Haddington’s community council did not object to the proposals but felt that the plans could be altered to keep the ground floor available for business use.
