City extends pay for injured firefighter Matt Dawson The Lubbock City Council voted earlier this month to extend firefighter Matt Dawson’s leave with full pay for one additional year. Dawson was critically injured in January while responding to a car accident in inclement weather. The crash killed two other first responders - Lubbock Fire Rescue Lt. Eric Hill and Lubbock police officer Nicholas Reyna - who were also working the scene of the initial wreck. The men were struck by a vehicle while at the scene of a car accident in icy conditions the morning of Jan. 11 on Interstate 27 in North Lubbock.

It’s well-established that communities of color are more likely to contract and die from COVID-19 for a variety of factors. Leaders within those communities wonder if the vaccine rollout happening now in Colorado, will reflect those disparities. Recent research from the Kaiser Family Foundation found a significant portion of Black and Hispanic adults are not confident that the vaccine development has taken their needs into account.
