Through a year of COVID-19 pandemic challenges and in the face of a national nurses shortage, along with local doctors leaving Mission, HCA Healthcare in North Carolina is still going strong, according to Greg Lowe, president of HCA Healthcare North Carolina.
Lowe updated the Council of Independent Business Owners on everything the hospital system has been doing over the past year at the group s May 7 meeting.
Over the past year and in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the system has conducted 51,000 telehealth encounters and more than 2.1 million patient encounters.
There are 24 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 at Mission Hospital in Asheville, he said, and a total 32 system-wide as of May 7.

Mission Health System celebrated a groundbreaking at the site of the new Angel Medical Center in Franklin.
The $68 million location will not have more beds than current hospital but the new space will have bigger rooms, and new technology and more windows explained Angel Medical Center Board of Trustees Chair Johnny Mira-Knippel.
“We’ve seen a major shift over the last several years to telemedicine, obviously recruiting the types of the physicians that we would need to service all the procedures that occur here is impossible. But with telemedicine we can bring advanced physicians locally to take more of our patients without having to send them away,” said Mira-Knippel. He is the president of TekTone Healthcare Communications. “The new facility is designed with that kind of facility in mind.”

New Zealand stands to benefit by up to $1 billion a year now that Australian tourists can come here quarantine-free from April 19.
Business groups, pilots and travel agents have welcomed the announcement by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.
While travellers from New Zealand have been able to enter much of Australia quarantine-free for the past six months, the announcement of a start date for a two-way bubble is a shot in the arm for struggling tourism and travel businesses on both sides of the Tasman.
