1. Pipe Masters got the Rona
Was this the most bizarre week in the WSL’s time as an organisation? It has to be a contender, right? To recap: on Sunday, Aus time, the WSL announced that they were halting the Pipe Masters “as a result of positive COVID-19 tests within the WSL staff, including WSL CEO Erik Logan”.
Who could have foreseen that coming? The running of an international sporting event in a public and natural environment, in a country easily hitting over 2000 COVID-related deaths a day? But what came next was even more bizarre. Following the suspension of their competition, the WSL went completely silent. They didn’t post on Instagram or Facebook for a full five days. Not once. As is often the case, November started a bit slow on the North Shore. (Except for Lucas Godfrey, who was on fire.) As soon as December started, though, the North Pacific decided to come back to life in a very meaningful way. Which meant that Pipeline saw days of pumping surf. Which meant, in turn, that O’Neill Wave of the Winter entries started flooding in five of which are highlighted below.

Subscriber only Coolum surfer Julian Wilson has gone through to sudden death elimination in round two of the Pipe Masters in Hawaii. The 32 year old jumped back into the water on Thursday for the first stop of the 2021 Championship Tour. Wilson started the first heat with a glimpse of his former self but just couldn t find his form as Griffin Colapinto reigned supreme.
