Karnataka Gram Panchayat election results 2020: Both BJP and Congress claim victory

Bengaluru, Dec 30: Both the ruling BJP and opposition Congress in Karnataka on Wednesday claimed major victories for candidates backed by them in the recent elections to over 5,700 village panchayats even as counting of votes polled in the grass-root level exercise was underway.

The elections, not held on party symbols, were conducted to 82,616 seats in 5,728 village panchayats in two phases on December 22 and 27 using ballot papers with a voter turnout of 78.58 per cent and counting was taken up on Wednesday morning.

Adivasi communities in Mysuru district are bracing to make a case for a separate “tribal segment’’ at the grassroots level so as to ensure devolution of power to the traditional forest-dwelling community.
Notwithstanding the recent gram panchayat elections which is celebrated as a strengthening Gram Swaraj and village self-governance, the tribes feel taken for a ride as they are given short shrift in an electoral base that is predominantly non-tribal.

Bengaluru, Dec 29 : Amid the Covid pandemic, the counting of votes for 5,728 Gram Panchayats in Karnataka that went for polls in two phases, will begin at 8 a.m. on Wednesday.
As ballot papers were used in polls other than in Bidar district where EVMs were used, the announcement of results may get delayed, polls officials said.
