Washington Island student, Door County teachers win Kohl Foundation awards MILWAUKEE - A Washington Island High School senior and two Door County teachers won awards from the Herb Kohl Foundation. Julia Valentincic of Washington Island received a $10,000 Student Initiative Scholarship to be received upon graduation this spring; and Jessica Meacham, a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) teacher at Southern Door Elementary School in Brussels, and Lisa Mueller, a first-grade teacher at St. John Bosco Catholic School in Sturgeon Bay, each were named for a Teacher Fellowship by the foundation, which carries a $6,000 award. The Student Initiative Scholarship is offered to 100 high schools in Wisconsin every seven years, with Washington Island being chosen for this year.
