OXFORD â The state moratorium on evictions that expired on July 1 likely kept some renters in Granville and Warren counties from ending up out on the street.
The pandemic also led to a halt to some court procedures. In March 2020, N.C. Supreme Court Chief Justice Cheri Beasley issued a memorandum postponing certain matters before clerks of Superior Court across the state, including foreclosures.
Those actions allowed tenants who were behind in paying rent to remain in their homes â at least temporarily.
Data from the office of the Clerk of Superior Court in Granville County indicates that the moratorium reduced the number of evictions in that county to about 40% of the number before the COVID-19 pandemic began.
OXFORD â The Granville County Chamber of Commerceâs board has hired Lauren Bennett Roberson as the business groupâs new executive director.
Roberson is a Vance County native and also familiar with Granville County. She has a history in the area that includes working with her family business, Hillside Farms in Vance County. She also has experience in marketing and social media.
Board members say Roberson brings tremendous energy and enthusiasm to the position and an innovative spirit that will serve as a basis for growing and supporting our membership.
âI am honored to be accepting the role of executive director of the Granville County Chamber of Commerce,â Roberson said. âThe Chamber has and will continue to be a vital part of the county by advocating for our members and shining a spotlight on this thriving community. I love Granville County and cannot wait to meet with and show our members and potential members what the Chamber has to offer them.â
OXFORD â Granville County Commissioners have voted to end the state of emergency they established early last year to claim the legal authority to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.
The emergency declaration, first declared on March 23, 2020, will end this coming Monday, July 12, commissioners said.
County officials cited as reasons for the decision âimprovements in the key COVID-19 metrics,â namely lower rates of emergency department visits, lower percentage of positive tests, and lower numbers of COVID-19 hospitalizations
Under state law, a local-level emergency declaration allows the county, city or town issuing it to use a host of follow-up measures to protect public safety including curfews, evacuations, restrictions on movement, business or alcohol sales, and restriction on the transportation, sale, purchase, storage and use of gasoline and other dangerous substances.
