What is a regulatory sandbox ? Why a new bill means more playtime for Utah businesses

SALT LAKE CITY A new bill under consideration on Utah s Capitol Hill would expand a regulatory relief program, which is currently available only to certain types of businesses, to any industry in the state. HB217, sponsored by Rep. Cory Maloy, R-Lehi, would expand the availability of regulatory sandboxes and create a new regulatory relief office within the Governor s Office of Economic Development. But what is regulatory sandbox? A regulatory sandbox is a new and unique way for businesses to innovate, Maloy told KSL.com. The main purpose is to encourage innovation, especially among small businesses and entrepreneurs. Benjamin Hart, deputy director of the GOED, said the sandboxes allow innovative ideas from businesses at the vanguard to thrive.

SALT LAKE CITY A new report issued Thursday by the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance says passing America s Red Rock Wilderness Act, which would protect millions more acres of land in Utah, could help mitigate the impacts of climate change and stem the loss of animal species and biodiversity. In a Thursday presentation from the Wilderness Alliance, the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Sierra Club, SUWA board member Regina Lopez-Whiteskunk said America s Red Rock Wilderness Act presents an extraordinary opportunity.

SALT LAKE CITY The federal minimum wage has been locked at $7.25 since 2009, and Utah is one of 20 states that has no higher requirement. Both locally and nationally, Democrats have for years called for a higher minimum wage while Republicans have pushed back because of business concerns. But with Democratic control of the U.S. House, Senate and presidency, the battle for a higher minimum wage has come front and center once again. And here in Utah, two Democratic legislators sponsored their own bills they hope will increase the minimum wage across the Beehive State, regardless of what happens in Washington.
