His debut album also went to No.1. 1961 – Alan Shepard becomes the first American to travel into outer space, on a sub-orbital flight. 1962 – West Side Story soundtrack album goes #1 & stays #1 for 54 weeks which is more than 20 weeks longer than any other album 1963 – On a recommendation by George Harrison, Dick Rowe Head of A&R at Decca records, (and the man who turned down The Beatles), went to see The Rolling Stones play at Crawdaddy Club, London. The band were signed to the label within a week.
