ODJFS issues $300 federal pandemic unemployment payments
Staff Report
COLUMBUS The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) has begun issuing supplemental weekly $300 Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) payments to eligible unemployment claimants following a new system programming update.
According to a news release from ODJFS, the payments were made possible by the federal Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021, which was signed on December 27, 2020.
“Each claim is important to us. We understand the urgency of providing Ohioans with the resources they need to support their families,” said ODJF Director Kimberly Henderson. “We worked quickly to align our system with the new requirements, and I am pleased that we can now provide much-needed relief to eligible claimants.”
900k Ohioans have received traditional unemployment since pandemic started
Since the pandemic started, the state has paid $7.9 billion in traditional unemployment benefits to 900,000 Ohioans. Another 827,000 workers have received $7.8 billion in federal unemployment benefits for those normally not eligible for unemployment benefits, such as those who are self-employed or contract workers.
Of the 1.4 million claims made under the federal pandemic program, 796,000 have been flagged for potential fraud, Husted said Thursday during the governor s office s regular coronavirus briefing. We do know funds have been paid to illegitimate claims, Kimberly Henderson, the agency s director, told reporters this week.
Last week, the agency said 1099-G tax forms will be sent to 1.7 million people in Ohio who have received unemployment benefits since March. Those benefits need to be reported as taxable income.

COLUMBUS, Ohio More than half of the 1.4 million Pandemic Unemployment Assistance benefits claims made in Ohio to date have been flagged as potentially fraudulent, Lt. Gov. Jon Husted said Thursday.
The shocking disclosure by Husted during a televised briefing comes as state officials are warning Ohioans to be on the lookout for identity thieves, many of whom use stolen information to apply for jobless benefits.
