LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – There is still no decision to bring the WIAA State Track and Field meet to UW-La Crosse.
UWL Athletic Director Kim Blum says the university is still in discussions to bring the event back to Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The event, which brings thousands to La Crosse, has been held annually in the city from 1990 until 2019.
It was canceled for 2020.
The WIAA lists June 25th and 26th dates for the event.
The WIAC is releasing schedules this week for the February return of winter sports for UW-La Crosse. It marks the return for basketball, wrestling, indoor track, and the swim team.
The fall semester has been especially difficult for the swimmers, with their Mitchell Hall poll shut down since August, with no advance warning or reasoning from UWL administration.
And to get their pool open again for this upcoming season took a complete team effort.
“There wasn’t a whole lot of communication from administration on why the pool was closed in the first place,” junior swimmer Amanda Wciorka said.
Emails to swim personnel from administration in the fall cited COVID-19 concerns and references to an outdated HVAC system that needed evaluation. But the CDC reports there’s no evidence that COVID-19 can be transferred to others in swimming pools, and it had the swim team baffled.
