LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) La Crosse County employees will get a one-time payment of $500, tax-free, to cover COVID-19 related expenses, under a resolution county supervisors approved Thursday after a contentious, two-hour debate.
Some supervisors resisted the idea, insisting that it would be unfair to workers in other occupations and challenging whether it would help the local economy.
The action survived a vote to refer the issue back to the executive committee in a quest to help more people, but it ultimately passed on a vote of 16 supervisors for, 12 against and one supervisor excused.

La Crosse County began its hotel voucher program for individuals experiencing homelessness and at risk of COVID-19 nearly two weeks ago, officials reported to a committee Wednesday morning.
The program â which pays for those without housing to quarantine at local hotels if theyâve tested positive for COVID-19, or are awaiting test results or have been exposed â received $25,000 in funding from the La Crosse County Executive Committee Wednesday.
