Concord s Neerali Parika wins Congressional Art Competition for NC s 8th District

Thomas Lott Concord High’s Neerali Parika was named the winner of the 2021 Artistic Discovery Contest for North Carolina’s 8th District at a special ceremony at the City Club at Gibson Mill on Wednesday. Parika’s black-and-white portrait of Michelle Obama will now be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year. The Congressional Art Competition is optional for Representatives across the country, but Congressman Richard Hudson has made a point to take part throughout his nine years in Congress because of his love for the arts. “I’ve always done it because I think it’s really important,” he said during his opening comments Wednesday evening. “Not only to highlight your art and talent, but I just think the arts are so important. They’re so important just for our quality of life, but I also think it’s great for brain development.

What I Have Learned: Concord Today

When I first came to Concord in 2003, I moved here from Charlotte. I believed Concord to be a small, county-seat town in the shadow of Charlotte. As I drove down beautiful Union Street to my new congregation, I felt as if I had traveled back several decades. I did not see what Concord had become and was becoming. In the last two articles, I explored Concord’s past. What I find even more fascinating is our current reality and what may happen in the years to come. I continue to be amazed at Concord’s growth and changes. While some of us still think that Concord is a small town with some growing pains, the reality is more complex. Below are some of my own personal observations.

First show back at Hebden Bridge Gallery

Gibson Mill by Ian Scott Massie. The Working Dales takes a theme which reflects the various aspects of work in the Pennines. Ian Scott Massie saw this exhibition with Heart Gallery as an opportunity to explore the kind of labour - past and present - which gives this area its unique personality. The pictures comprise watercolours worked in rich colour on paper (made, appropriately, from cotton rags) and screen prints made through a reduction process involving pressing ink through a single screen which is gradually blocked out, meaning there is no turning back if and when mistakes are made. The paintings depict various local scenes including Gibson Mill, The Piece Hall and Hebden Bridge.
