One of the most enduring ways for communities and individuals to touch our collective memories is to physically touch memorials, like those built to honor those who served our nation and who paid the ultimate price for our freedoms. The Chaplain Schmitt Island Veterans Memorial Plaza in Dubuque is one such place.
We honor and remember Iowa native Father Aloysius Schmitt one of the first chaplains killed in World War II. It was June 17, 2016, my first day in a new Navy assignment at the Navy Chief of Chaplains Office at the Pentagon, when I first touched the life and memory of Father Schmitt. My office phone rang: A delegation from Dubuque was coming to D.C. to seek an upgrade in Chaplain Aloysius Schmitt s posthumous Navy and Marine Corps Medal. They needed my assistance.

50th Figawi Race Weekend
This weekend marks the 50th anniversary of Figawi Race Weekend, along with the event s first-ever two-day racing series Saturday and Sunday. The Figawi Race Committee, led by Principal Race Officer Tom Duggan, will be orchestrating the pursuit long-distance races.
This is according to a press release from the Diocese of Shreveport.
Shreveport s Bishop Francis Malone said in the release that the allegations against Rev. Seby Shan Chemmampallil do not, at this time, involve physical contact with minors, [but] they nonetheless constitute serious violation of the law.
According to Bossier Sheriff s Office records, Chemmampallil, 36, was booked into Bossier Maximum Security Facility Friday at 4:20 p.m. The records show he is charged with (4 counts) Pornography Involving Juveniles and (2 counts) Sexual Abuse of an Animal. Bond is set at $100,000.
Bishop Malone also encourages those who are suspicious of clergy members sexually abusing minors to contact the Diocesan Victim Assistance Minister at 318-584-2411 or the Louisiana Bureau of Investigation at 225-326-6100.

A Bossier City priest is removed from his assignment as an associate priest at Christ the King Church following allegations of pornography involving juveniles and the sexual abuse of animals.
The Diocese of Shreveport issued a statement to parishioners in reference to Father Seby Shan.
Shreveport s Bishop Francis Malone said in the release that the allegations against Reverend Shan do not, at this time, involve physical contact with minors, [but] they nonetheless constitute serious violation of the law.
36-year-old Seby Shan Chemmampallil was booked into Bossier Maximum Security Facility Friday afternoon. He faces four counts of pornography involving juveniles and two counts of sexual abuse of an animal.
