First UK variant case of COVID-19 confirmed in York Region

A King Township resident is the first case of the faster-spreading United Kingdom variant of COVID-19 to be confirmed in York Region. The case is one of three additional UK variant cases confirmed in Ontario, bringing the total to six as of Jan. 4, associate medical officer of health for Toronto Public Health Barbara Yaffe stated in a media briefing. The case was acquired as a result of work-related travel to the UK and was confirmed on Dec. 22, according to regional spokesperson Patrick Casey.  The more contagious UK variant of COVID-19 is spreading rapidly through southern England and is being detected in a number of other European countries now, as well as Canada.

The latest was a driver who was found stopped in the middle of a major intersection just north of the city early Monday morning, apparently completely asleep. Officers from York Regional Police (YRP) responded to a call and discovered the 33-year old man s vehicle blocking north and southbound traffic at the corner of King Road and Keele Street, right by a busy exit for Highway 404 in King Township, about 40 minutes north of the downtown core.
