Workshop gives women an idea of what it takes to be a firefighter KIRO 7 News Staff More than 30 women attended a two-day weekend workshop to explore what it would take to be a firefighter or paramedic. The Puget Sound Regional Fire Authority hosted the Future Women in EMS and Fire in Kent. Women firefighters and paramedics from across King County worked the event. Officials with the King County Fire Chiefs Association and King County Emergency Medical Services said they want to improve diversity in fire departments and EMS and are recruiting women to join the workforce. The goal of the workshop, which was designed by women for women, was to educate, clarify expectations, and provide support for women in the hiring process.

2 Kirkland Firefighters Honored For Pandemic Efforts

Reply (Shutterstock/Colleen Michaels) KIRKLAND, WA The King County Fire Chiefs Association has recognized two members of the Kirkland Fire Department for outstanding service during an especially challenging year. According to the city, the association usually selects just one firefighter in the county to receive the annual commendation for distinguished service. This year, members moved to recognize both men for their work during the coronavirus pandemic. Kirkland was the nation s first epicenter of infections in the United States. Deputy Chief Dave Van Valkenburg and Battalion Chief Bill Hoover shared the honor last week. Van Valkenburg was honored for his leadership in ensuring personal protective equipment for his crews, and Hoover for his leadership in developing policies.
