Kingston Twp police investigating insensitive and racist post

Kingston Twp. police have launched a criminal investigation after an officer’s Facebook profile was used to post an off-color comment on a picture regarding the use of face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic. The comment was posted using the profile of Officer Courtney Hontz, who joined the department just last month. Hontz has denied posting the comment, and police are investigating whether someone else accessed her account to post it, police Chief Michael A. Moravec said. “We’re investigating a crime, and if we determine that a crime has been committed, then we will act appropriately,” he said. “Conversely, if a crime was reported and that crime did not happen, we will act accordingly.”

County controller s race could be rematch of 2017

It looks like this year’s race for Luzerne County controller might be a rematch of 2017, when incumbent Democrat Michelle Bednar defeated Republican challenger and former controller Walter Griffith. Griffith and Bednar both said this week they plan to seek their party’s nomination in the May 18 primary. Bednar, 54, of Conyngham Twp., will seek a third and final four-year term in the office to which she was first elected in 2013. The county charter limits the controller to three consecutive terms. Griffith, 66, of Kingston Twp., will make another attempt to regain the office from which he resigned in 2013 as part of a plea agreement in a wiretapping case.

Council election looms; incumbents offer advice to first-time candidates

Five seats on Luzerne County Council will be on the ballot next year, and at least two new council members will be seated in 2022. The May 18 primary, slightly more than five months away, is expected to attract a large field of council candidates from both major parties. That is partly because two incumbents whose seats expire at the end of 2021, Harry Haas and Linda McClosky Houck, are term-limited and may not run for re-election. Also, incumbent Sheila Saidman, whose seat also expires at the end of next year, said last week she will likely not seek another term. At least one former council candidate, Republican Gregory Wolovich, has announced plans to run again next year.
