Scammers Pose as Calhoun County Sheriff’s Deputies Deputy Art Draper tells WBCK that the man was called on Monday, February 15 th.   He later told deputies that the first man who called had an Indian accent and claimed to be with the department.  He said they told him they had an outstanding warrant concerning an accident that happened in San Antonio, Texas.  The caller provided a fake badge number and fake warrant information. The suspect asked the citizen for his bank name and the last four numbers of his account number.   The caller then told the man not to talk to anyone about the call.   A few minutes later, a second man called the victim, also with an Indian accent.  He mentioned the name of Sheriff Steve Hinkley and gave the same story about an outstanding warrant.   Deputy Draper thinks the second caller may have been trying to verify or correct some information obtained during the first call.

Union City Police seize counterfeit bills The Daily Reporter The Union City Police Department has seized a number of counterfeit bills and merchandise after an investigation last week.  Village Manager/ Police Chief Chris Mathis said the investigation started with a handful of counterfeit money complaints. Bills were passed twice at the Shell Station and once at BP. Then a private seller took $150 for an RC car on Facebook Marketplace which turned out to be counterfeit.   On Feb. 12, the UCPD, assisted by the Calhoun County Sheriff s Department, executed a search warrant on 8 Mile Road in Union City related to these complaints. 

Death in Calhoun County Jail Thought to be From Natural Causes

Death in Calhoun County Jail Thought to be From Natural Causes An ICE detainee died in the Calhoun County Jail on Friday.   A release from the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department said the man died at 11:38 a.m. on February 5 th.   The release states that the man is a U.S. Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainee. The death appears to have resulted from natural causes, and not be related to COVID-19. 58-year-old Jesse Jermone Dean Jr. was a Bahamian national.  Dean was arrested by ICE on December 31, 2020, after his release from the U.S. Bureau of Prisons at North Lake Correctional Facility in Baldwin, Michigan, following completion of a 30-year federal sentence on charges of conspiracy to possess cocaine, possession, conspiracy to import cocaine, importation of cocaine and use of a communications device in the commission of a felony.
