BATTLE CREEK, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department says a 58-year-old man died in the Calhoun County Jail last Friday morning.
The inmate past away at 11:38 a.m. that morning.
The Sheriff’s Department said in a statement released on Tuesday morning that this individual was a U.S. Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainee. ICE has identified the man as Jesse Jermone Dean Junior of the Bahamas.
Dean was arrested by ICE on December 31 after he was released from a federal prison in Baldwin. Dean had served 30 years for importing cocaine into the country and other drug charges.

A 22-year-old Athens Township man is awaiting a February court appearance after being charged this week with killing a puppy with a chainsaw.
Erik Paul Taylor is facing up to 10 years in prison if convicted of killing or torturing a five-month-old Black Labrador/Treeing Walker Coonhound mix puppy which belonged to his sister-in-law. Calhoun County Sheriff Department deputies were called by Melody Taylor at 12:32 p.m. Jan. 23 to the 3900 block of 3 1/2 Mile Road in Athens Township after she said Erik Taylor, her brother-in-law, said he killed the dog and she found blood on a chainsaw and bandanna that the dog was wearing the night before.

MARSHALL TOWNSHIP, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – A Marshall teenager was flown to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo on Thursday night after his vehicle crashed into a tree in Calhoun County.
The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department says the crash happened at about 7:30 p.m. in the area of 19 Mile Road and F Drive South in Marshall Township.
Deputies found the vehicle was in the ditch and had struck a tree.
The 18-year-old driver was found pinned in the vehicle and unconscious.
Firefighters from the Homer and Fredonia Township Fire Departments were able to free the youngster who was then flown out.

A Calhoun County Sheriff Department deputy has been fired after he arrested a man early this month while circulating petitions.
Sheriff Steve Hinkley said in a statement Friday afternoon that the deputy, who was not named, was fired following a review of the incident by the department s Office of Professional Standards.
