TOKYO Earth-shaped gummy treats known as Planet Gummi have recently created a buzz on social media in Japan, especially among young people, and have been selling out in succession across the country. In Japan, the candies are dubbed chikyu gumi, or earth gummies. After hearing about them for the first time this spring, a Mainichi Shimbun reporter explored the background to this mysterious product and what has driven its popularity.

For a homesick international resident in Japan, a snack from home, or a beloved name brand from childhood, can sometimes be just the thing. Today, non-Japanese ingredients are available at most supermarkets, and peanut butter is sitting right there on the shelf. Many new-to-Japan residents might never have heard of a company that, for decades, was the only way to get Honey Nut Cheerios, Kraft Mac & Cheese and many other staples of a life left behind.
