RALEIGH â North Carolina received more than $4.9 million federal funds for small rural hospitals in the state to provide COVID-19 testing and mitigation, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services announced on July 30. The program will provide increased COVID-19 testing to rural populations ensuring an equitable distribution across the state.
Nineteen hospitals will receive up to $258,376 to increase COVID-19 testing efforts, expand access to testing in rural communities and expand the range of COVID-19 mitigation activities to meet community needs. All 19 hospitals have fewer than 50 beds or are critical access hospitals.

RALEIGH â Approximately 58 percent of all adults age 18 and older have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine with 46 percent of the total population having been fully vaccinated, according to statistics from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services as of Monday, July 26.
The organization reports that more than 9.69 million total doses of vaccine have been administered in the state as of July 26, noting that of individuals 65 years of age and older, 86 percent of the population has received at least one dose of the vaccine, while 84 percent have received their full allotment. Of individuals 12 and older, 58 percent of the stateâs residents have received at least one dose of a vaccine, with 54 percent being completely vaccinated.

NEWLAND â The Avery County Health Department and the Baker Clinic at Cannon Memorial Hospital have announced that first dose COVID-19 vaccines are now available for anyone ages 16 and up.
Appointments can be made by calling the health department at (828) 733-8273 or the Baker Center at (828) 737-7711. The health department is located at 545 Schultz Circle in Newland and will be offering vaccines Monday to Friday. The Baker Center is located at 436 Hospital Drive, Suite 230 in Linville and will offer vaccines from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturdays.
COVID-19 testing is now available at the Avery County Health Department on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. No appointments are needed for a test.
