2 men on terrorism watch list stopped at U.S. border

CALEXICO, Calif. (AP) Two men on a terrorism watch list were arrested after illegally crossing the border from Mexico into California, the U.S. Border Patrol announced Monday.
A 33-year-old man from Yemen was stopped on Jan. 29 a few miles from the Calexico Port of Entry, according to a statement from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
A cellphone SIM car was found hidden under the insole of his shoe, authorities said.
A 26-year-old man, also from Yemen, was arrested near the same port of entry on March 30.
Border Patrol Catches 2 Yemenis on FBI Terror Watch List
Within the last two months, Border Patrol agents have apprehended two Yemeni men who are on FBI’s Terrorism Watch List and the No-Fly list, according to Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
Both men were arrested in separate incidents after crossing the border illegally just west of the Calexico Port of Entry in California.
Agents apprehended the first man, a 33-year-old, on Jan. 29. They also found a cellular phone sim card hidden underneath the insole of his shoe, according to CBP.
The man was transferred to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The second man, a 26-year-old illegal alien, was arrested on March 30. CBP said he is being held in federal custody pending removal.

U.S. Border Patrol agents have arrested two Yemeni men on a terrorism watch list, U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced Monday.
The men, ages 33 and 26, were arrested Jan. 29 and March 30 on suspicion of illegally entering the United States after being apprehended several miles from the Calexico Port of Entry.
The agency did not release the names of the two men. Both were on the FBI’s Terrorism Watch List and on a “no-fly list,” according to the agency.
Officials said they found a cellphone SIM card hidden underneath the insole of the 33-year-old.

In a statement, an agency spokesman said that “encounters of known and suspected terrorists at our borders are very uncommon.”

U.S. Border Patrol Agents recently arrested two Yemeni men on the terrorist watch list after they entered the country illegally through California. The men were taken into custody separately and detained on different dates.
The first incident occurred on January 29, at approximately 1:10 a.m., when agents assigned to the El Centro Station arrested a man for illegally entering the United States. Agents apprehended the man approximately three miles west of the Calexico Port of Entry and transported him to the El Centro Processing Center for immigration and criminal history screening.
Agents conducted records checks, which revealed that the man, a 33-year-old illegal alien from Yemen, was on the FBI’s Terrorism Watch List as well as on the No-Fly list.
