A bill that would establish a “clean fuel standard” aimed at reducing polluting carbon emissions from fuels like gasoline or diesel used in transportation was passed by the Senate Tax, Business and Transportation Committee Thursday and could next face a vote on the Senate Floor.
Senate Bill 11, known as the Clean Fuel Standard Act, previously passed the Senate Conservation Committee 6-2 vote, and was granted a “do pass” recommendation by the tax committee on a vote of 7-4.
During Thursday hearing, Sen. Mimi Steward (D-17) who sponsored the bill said the concept of a clean fuel standard came from the New Mexico Environment Department – part of the Climate Change Task Force created to reduce pollution in the state – as a way to curb air pollution while also diversifying the economy.
