Edison High School students want you to pick their kicks in nationwide contest to support art program
The shoes take inspiration from San Antonio’s cultural surroundings and Fiesta

SAN ANTONIO – One group of San Antonio students is giving a couple of pairs of Vans shoes the Fiesta experience as part of a contest to help support their art program.
Students at Thomas Edison High School are competing against other teams nationwide for $50,000 dollars to help support their art program.
The contest is part of the Vans Custom Culture competition.
The students at Edison are currently ranked 50th in voting and hope to make a slot in the contests’ top five with their Fiesta flair.
It s no surprise that when something is created, it s usually based on something else. In this case, the designer that works for Nike named Niek Pulles noticed that tendency with shoes and cars. The artist saw that many vehicles, their shape, design, and colors, are very similar to footwear design and vice versa. So he decided to put them side by side and share this discovery with the world on his Instagram page.
He told
Bored Panda: Well, it’s more like brainstorming and a personal visual puzzle. I love to tell stories. I’m a designer and currently work for Nike. So it’s more like sneaker research combined with my love for car design. I find similarities in the world of sport and the automotive industry. It’s all about speed and construction. Both are art forms, timeless sculptures. That’s what I love about it and that why I started this research. Niek for Speed is my platform and brainfart doing creative research.

The newly launched partnership this marks the second drop is the first time these two iconic names, partners in dressing stylish weirdos for decades, have come together. First up is Owens latest take on Dr. Martens 1460 Bex boot, complete with pentagram lacing (a motif of his mainline footwear) and dark-glam grey suede. Not to mention it sits atop the hard-hitting Bex sole, which between the brand s classic air-cushioned outsole and the full-volume platform sole making for a slightly eccentric stomper that you can still wear without fear of totally tipping over.

With an estimated 10,000+ people in Toronto currently experiencing homelessness and hundreds of thousands more living in poverty, it s almost unfathomable to picture a retailer purposely destroying designer shoes before putting them in the trash (rather than, you know, donating them to people in need.)
