By WILLIAM COLE | The Honolulu Star-Advertiser | Published: April 4, 2021 HONOLULU (Tribune News Service) The Coast Guard s five newest cutters in Honolulu including two of the service s most capable 418-foot vessels continue to reach farther across the Pacific to combat illegal fishing and counter the growing influence of China. Recent deployments of the national security cutter Kimball and the smaller fast-response cutter Joseph Gerczak are representative of growing national security responsibilities as greater Coast Guard integration with the Navy and Marine Corps is sought. Honolulu has two of the big cutters the Coast Guard calls the centerpiece of its fleet, as well as three 154-foot fast-response cutters.

Monroe Public Schools goes remote due to COVID spike Area school districts continue to monitor pandemic, positivity rates Monroe County’s largest school district has made the decision to briefly convert to all-remote learning after its students return from spring break. Monroe Public Schools announced students at all of its campuses will switch to online learning April 12-16 due to concerns surrounding rising instances of COVID-19 within its community and the broader county.  The district’s regularly scheduled spring break begins today and ends April 9. Students were originally set to return to in-person learning April 12. That return has been delayed until April 19.
