Our kids need to be in school
Monday night the Ames School Board voted 4-3 against allowing students to return to school for full-time instruction. As a parent with a son at Ames Middle School and another at Ames High, we are impacted every weekday by this policy. Let’s face it. While teachers are doing their best to instruct students online, the reality is a far less engaging academic environment. Kids are kids, and the distractions of being online all the time are tremendous. It is much easier to ignore a teacher or chat with your friends when you are not in a classroom. You may not realize it, but in most of the middle school classes, students have their cameras off. I say this from personally watching my son’s classes. Imagine trying to conduct one of your work meetings with all the cameras off. Our son, by all accounts a good student, has forgotten to turn in assignments and even check in for schoo
