Stephen A. Smith believes the Jets, Dolphins, Saints and Jaguars would be good landing spots for Deshaun Watson. (2:09)
Thirty other NFL teams want to be in the position of the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers one win away from a Super Bowl title and the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
Unlike for the Chiefs and Bucs, the biggest obstacle facing many teams in getting to championship contention is at quarterback, a position poised for massive turnover this offseason. For others, it s rebuilding a defense to complement a potent offense. And for an unfortunate few, it s a wholesale talent infusion that s needed to climb back into contention.
Roster Strategy for 2021
Kinda too large of a subject to really hope to hit close to bullseye, I know. So I m just going to talk some generalities.
First comment: I thought the (front office) strategy last year was relatively smart. They knew that the team needed to fill a lot of areas and that they d be drafting Burrow. They figured out where the draft was heavy with one of their major needs (LB) and tried to narrow things in other positional areas through UFA (NT Reader; LB Bynes; SS Bell; CBs Waynes, Alexander, Sims; OG XSF; WR Thomas). They also were willing for one of the first times I can recall to drop worn out vets with extended contract years and eat some larger money sums to save cap and upgrade roster talent (e.g. CBs Kirkpatrick and Webb; OG Miller; QB Dalton). After a season that saw them come up far short of their expectations, the Seattle Seahawks are going back to the drawing board this offseason. With head coach Pete Carroll and now former offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer having a difference of opinion (which caused Schottenheimer to not return), this will be a very important time for Seattle.
Still led by quarterback Russell Wilson, the run-heavy scheme that Carroll wants to run is going to be a very interesting melding of sorts, taking the passing game talents of Wilson and combining it with whatever semblance of a rushing attack this team will have. With the incumbent starting back Chris Carson hitting free agency, will the Seahawks choose to bring him back, or has Rashaad Penny done enough in his limited, injury-riddled time to give him the keys to the offense?
