Tokyo: An American father-son duo who helped former Nissan chief Carlos Ghosn flee Japan were sentenced to 20 months and two years in prison by a Tokyo court on Monday.
The sentences are the first to be handed down in Japan in the Nissan saga, which began with former auto tycoon Ghosn’s shock arrest in 2018 on financial misconduct allegations.
Former US special forces operative Michael Taylor was jailed for two years, while his son Peter received a sentence of 20 months.
“This case enabled Ghosn, a defendant of serious crime, to escape overseas,” chief judge Hideo Nirei said.
“Both defendants pulled off an unprecedented escape,” the judge added, noting that there was no prospect of Ghosn - an international fugitive in Lebanon - returning to Japan.

U.S. suspects in Carlos Ghosn s escape to be turned over to Japan: sources
An American man and his son who allegedly helped former Nissan Motor Co. Chairman Carlos Ghosn flee Japan in 2019 will soon be handed over to Japanese authorities, sources close to the matter said Saturday.
The Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office sent prosecutors to the United States the same day to arrest the two men, Michael Taylor, 60, a former Green Beret, and his son Peter Taylor, 28, for enabling a criminal suspect to escape, among other charges, according to the sources. File photo taken April 25, 2019, shows former Nissan Motor Co. Chairman Carlos Ghosn being released from the Tokyo Detention House on bail for a second time. Ghosn escaped to Lebanon in December that year. (Kyodo) ==Kyodo
