SPANISH FORK After Bear River s McCall Maxfield lost to Tooele in the first game of the best-of-three Class 4A state championship series Friday afternoon, she did what any competitive softball teenager would do to get back on the right track. She fired up a karaoke machine with a freshman after going to an escape room with the team and sang along to a collection from the Frozen soundtrack and a few Taylor Swift albums. And it worked like a charm. Maxfield belted a home run in each of the two remaining games Saturday, and older sister Olivia went 4-for-5 with a home run, three RBI and three runs scored over two games to help Bear River clinch its 10th state title and third since 2016 with a 14-6 win Saturday afternoon over reigning champion Tooele at the Spanish Fork Complex.

Lady Bears complete undefeated region slate; seniors honored

The Lady Bears softball club finished off the regular season emphatically last week, winning at home in convincing fashion on senior night to cap an undefeated run through the Region 11 schedule. The Bears are now focused on making a run in the state 4A tournament and will begin their playoff quest later this week on home turf. Bear River closed out the region schedule hosting Mountain Crest on Tuesday, May 4, and the Bears bats got going early with five first-inning runs. The Mustangs got within 5-3 in the top of the second inning, but that was as close as it would get as the Lady Bears added four runs in the third and five more in the fourth, capped off by McCall Maxfield’s two-run homer, to cruise to a 15-3 win in four-and-a-half innings.

Barrel Daze weekend has local rider shine in Sunday competition

Carlee Miller of Bowman was one of the top riders Sunday as the three-day Mon-Dak Barrel Daze events came to a close. Late in Sunday’s competition, Miller was sitting in third place with a time of 15.051 seconds on the leaderboard. Miller, who was riding DHR Perks Only Okie, was behind leader Kara Langerud (14.955 seconds) and Kate Hatter (15.000 seconds). The event was the Open BBR 5D format competition. The three-day overall event started Friday with time Onlys, then followed with Time Onlys Saturday morning, followed by the $2000 added Open 5D Barrel Races. The competition continued Sunday after the Cowboy Church, with also Church Race side pot available to competitors.

Weekend Traffic Accidents in Fayette County The Fayette County Sheriff s Office reports several weekend traffic accidents. On Saturday (Jan. 30) at about 3:30am, their office received a 911 call, reporting a one-vehicle rollover on Highway 3, about one mile east of Oelwein. 23 year old Shayla Decker of Aurora was driving a pickup eastbound, when it went out of control, entered a ditch and collided with a road sign. Decker had to be extricated from the wreckage. She was taken to Oelwein MercyOne hospital for treatment. Her 2002 Chevrolet Silverado was totaled.
