Regarding “ ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ turns up torture in season 4” (May 23): Carla Meyer criticizes “The Handmaid’s Tale” (the Hulu series about a misogynistic dystopia based on Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel) for its repeated depictions of violence against women and suggests that season 4 intensifies “torture porn.”

“The Handmaid’s Tale,” now in the midst of its fourth season, became a cultural phenomenon as soon as it premiered in April 2017. Hulu’s adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel about women stripped of their sexual and reproductive freedoms by a faux-religious regime hit a nerve: It arrived three months into the presidency of a man caught on tape bragging about groping women yet embraced by the religious right.
The series grew more resonant months later, when allegations against Hollywood film producer Harvey Weinstein fueled the #MeToo movement against sexual abuse. That’s 30% of this year’s acting nominations. They weren’t the only U.K. actors nominated, but Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman graciously agreed to play Londoners this year, earning nods for their respective roles in “The Father.”

Some critics contend that British actors are better than their American colleagues because they study movement and speech intensively in acting school, and often act onstage between TV and film gigs. There might be some credence to the idea, considering many of our A-listers train at the Academy of “My Father is a Big Deal in Hollywood.”
