That’s 30% of this year’s acting nominations. They weren’t the only U.K. actors nominated, but Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman graciously agreed to play Londoners this year, earning nods for their respective roles in “The Father.”
Americans playing Brits, by comparison, account for 0% of this year’s nominations. So we’ll have to hang on to Rami Malek’s 2019 win for playing Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody” a bit longer.
Some critics contend that British actors are better than their American colleagues because they study movement and speech intensively in acting school, and often act onstage between TV and film gigs. There might be some credence to the idea, considering many of our A-listers train at the Academy of “My Father is a Big Deal in Hollywood.”
