OPG in Bruce County – Community Update – May 2021

Article content Work in progress At the Western Waste Management Facility (WWMF), work continues on upgrading our incinerator, a project we started in late March. Think of this as WWMF’s mini-refurbishment. The incinerator is a smaller machine than a reactor, of course, but it’s vital to our good stewardship of nuclear by-products, helping to reduce the volume of low-level materials by up to 90%.  That’s important to our environmental practice of minimizing stored volumes, and maximizing the re-use and recycling of clean materials. We’re on track to complete the planned 74-day outage in the coming month, as we finishing installing new components and then test them, before resuming normal operations.

Canadian trio collaborates on Candu decommissioning : Waste & Recycling

13 May 2021 Share Ontario Power Generation s (OPG) Centre for Canadian Nuclear Sustainability (CCNS), Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) and SNC-Lavalin have signed an agreement to work together on the decommissioning of Candu reactors around the world. Pickering (Image: OPG) They will build on Ontario s nuclear industry expertise and skilled workforce to deliver safe, cost-effective and timely nuclear decommissioning projects; explore the potential for international decommissioning-related opportunities for the Canadian nuclear industry; and identify future skills needs and gaps, and develop plans to fill those gaps. The CCNS was launched last year by OPG as a regional hub to integrate collaboration and research to strengthen Ontario s supply chain and support preparations for the decommissioning of the Pickering nuclear power plant, which is scheduled to end commercial operations in 2025.
