AgriLand spoke with some of the local farmers who would have been attending the mart on a weekly basis to get their opinion on the current situation.
Local beef and dairy farmer Aileen McGahan explained:
“A lot of people, including myself, were shocked to hear it because at their last sale before Christmas there was no talk of it closing.
We only live 4km away from the mart and my father has driven a world of cattle to sales over the years. It will be a massive loss to the people of Cootehill town with the jobs it had created.
Cootehill Mart had a reputation for offering good weanlings.
Station Road mart in Cootehill, Co Cavan, is to close with immediate effect, its directors have confirmed.
The mart, “is and always has been solvent”, directors Jimmy and Carmel O’Reilly said in a statement confirming the closure.
The popular Cavan mart reopened its doors on 4 September 2013 under the management of the O Reillys after a number of years of inactivity.
Its catchment area included Monaghan, Cavan, Longford and Meath, with a large customer base built up over the years.
A general cattle sale, weanling sale and sheep sale took place weekly.
