State Farm Arena, home of the Atlanta Hawks, delivered what it is calling the “first-ever zero-waste NBA All-Star Game,” diverting more than 97% of waste from landfill.
State Farm Arena worked with Rubicon to use the technology company’s software and equipment for collecting and hauling materials, along with logistical and operational support. Beginning with the second half of the Atlanta Hawks’ 2020-21 regular season, State Farm Arena will continue to work with Rubicon on the newly implemented processes to ensure the venue remains a zero-waste venue for all future events. State Farm Arena hosts approximately 200 events annually.
The new owner of the Carbide & Carbon Building plans to open a rebranded hotel in the North Michigan Avenue landmark by this spring, offering a rare vote of confidence to a downtown Chicago tourism market that has been pummeled by COVID-19. National Hockey League team the Philadelphia Flyers will now practice in a facility powered by 100% renewable energy. Parent company Comcast Spectacor has completed the installation of a 1.06 megawatt onsite solar system at the Flyers Skate Zone in New Jersey. The facility will achieve 100% renewable electricity supply for the facility starting in 2021, the company says.
Installation of the rooftop solar panels began in May 2020 via an agreement with energy service provider SunPower and was completed in November. Comcast Spectacor will sell the renewable energy certificates (RECs) from the onsite solar and purchase national RECs to provide all Spectacor facilities with 100% renewable electricity, according to the company.

The Carbide & Carbon Building, which is undergoing its second makeover in three years, is set to get a French brasserie this spring, with an oyster and champagne bar.
Venteux, which means “windy” in French, will be located on the ground floor of the upcoming Pendry Chicago hotel in the historic building at 230 N. Michigan Ave.
The space will be designed to feel like a contemporary Parisienne restaurant, with dark wood, brass fixtures and heavy red velvets, said Andy Masi, founder of the restaurant’s operator, Clique Hospitality.
Venteux is meant to cater to folks swinging in for an after-work drink or grabbing a baguette sandwich for lunch, he said.
