When Walker Books U.S. publishes
Ferryman by Claire McFall the first in a romantic YA fantasy trilogy reimagining the Charon myth in October, it will mark the latest stop in the book’s unusual journey.
Ferryman was originally published in the U.K. in 2013 by Templar Books, where it had been acquired by editor Helen Boyle. McFall’s debut novel won that year’s Scottish Children’s Book Award in the Older Readers category and was shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal as well as for several other prizes. In 2015
Ferryman landed in China, where it became a runaway hit, leading to the trilogy racking up sales of more than four million total copies to date. Isle Of Wight Story Festival Proves Worldwide Success

This year s Isle of Wight Story Festival attracted hundreds of people from across the world - including as far as the Netherlands, Canada, Trinidad and Tobago and the USA.
Over the four days, the festival – which mixed pre-recorded, with live-streamed YouTube sessions – attracted 2,853 views from 855 different devices.
But if you didn’t manage to catch it live, the good news is that all sessions will remain on the IW Story Festival’s YouTube channel, at least until Saturday (27).

As a genre, young adult literature is still fairly young. Its modern iteration has only been around since the 1960s. And though YA readership has grown exponentially over the last decades, the diversity of the authors behind the books is in its infancy. But that is changing.
As the number of Black YA authors grows, so have their stories. These authors not only show Black teens dealing with the same coming of age issues that any teen would deal with – falling in love, finding your place in the world, coming to terms with their sexuality, but also navigating issues like systemic racism and microaggressions, says LaKeshia N. Darden, librarian and adjunct professor at Campbell University and Coretta Scott King Book Awards Jury, Chair 2019-2021.

The awards are presented by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP). The shortlists will be announced on March 18, 2021, and winners will be announced June 16, 2021 in a ceremony at the British Library in London, UK. Winners receive £500 worth of books to donate to local libraries, a golden medal, and a £5,000 Colin Mears Award cash prize.
