Working together, welder Robert Lawson and registered emergency room nurse Jeffrey Johnson pulled Susan Leonard to safety from her vehicle as it was engulfed in flames. Last week, both men were notified that they will receive the Carnegie Medal the highest honor for civilian heroism in the U.S. and Canada. Johnson spoke with WFDD’s David Ford.

Man who drowned in Panama City Beach rescuing boy given Carnegie Medal

PANAMA CITY BEACH A Vernon man who died while rescuing a drowning child last year has posthumously received the nation s highest medal of honor for heroism by a civilian. The Carnegie Hero Fund Commission announced last week that Stacey Redmon, who was 48 years old at the time of the rescue, was named one of 17 recipients for the Carnegie Medal. The medal is awarded throughout the U.S. and Canada to individuals who enter mortal danger while saving or attempting to save the lives of others, the philanthropy website CarnegieHero.org states. I literally cried, said Alisha Redmon, who had been married to Stacey Redmon for 25 years before his death. I was so overjoyed that he got recognition for what he did. To be recognized nationally in such a high, prestigious award is the best Christmas gift ever.

The Carnegie Hero Fund Commission dedicated a Carnegie Medal in remembrance of Editor Wendi Winters. The award recognizes civilians who risked their lives to save others. Winters was one of 17 people across the U.S. and Canada to earn the distinction this quarter. When a gunman stormed the Capital Gazette newsroom on June 28, 2018, Winters tried to stop him. She grabbed a garbage can and a recycling bin, and charged at the shooter.
