Like most bakers, Jon Olek starts his day long before sunrise. He fires up his oven at 3:30 a.m. and bakes for three hours before setting out to deliver fresh scones, Danishes, and brioche buns to city cafes and shops. “I get back right in time to go upstairs and help my daughter get ready for school,” he says, adding that he starts prepping for the next day’s baking when she leaves. Olek has that flexibility in his schedule because he doesn’t work at a commercial bakery, but rather out of a commercial-grade kitchen he built in his basement, where he does business as Black Cat Baking Co.

The opening minutes of a movie can be a make-it-or-break-it proposition. They’re like the first 50 pages of a novel. If the author hasn’t hooked you and reeled you in by then, well it’s time to move on to the next book on your nightstand. Of course, no one’s going to get up and walk out of a movie after ten minutes not when they’ve already forked over fifteen bucks. But a less than great start puts a director at a disadvantage. He or she has to win you back.
I keep a list of movies with perfect openings filed away in my head, from tried-and-true classics like
Early Years
Carter was born about 1707 to Robert “King” Carter, a land baron and member of the governor’s Council, and Elizabeth Landon Willis Carter. It was the second marriage of both his parents. His elder half brother John Carter (d. 1742) became secretary of the colony and also a councillor, and his younger brother, Landon Carter, served with him in the House of Burgesses. Carter and his brothers were educated in England. After his return to Virginia early in 1724 he moved to one of his father’s estates near Urbanna, in Middlesex County. The governor appointed Carter naval officer, or customs official, for the Rappahannock District on November 1, 1729, and on the following April 29 named him a justice of the peace for Middlesex County.
