GIRARD Girard city officials are reaching out to Liberty and Weathersfield townships to see if they may be interested in forming a joint fire district.
One key element to such an organization would be agreement on a levy based on property taxes to cover fire district expenses.
Mayor James Melfi said Girard council late last year gave its approval for officials to look into what would be involved in creating a district with the city’s neighboring communities.
Melfi and Safety Service Director Jerry Lambert are expected to reach out to these communities to see if there would be an interest and then inform council at its next meeting 6:30 p.m. Feb. 22 of what has been discussed.

Construction crews in Canfield were in for a surprise when they arrived at a house theyâre building and found a fox inside the basement. The Cardinal Joint Fire District safely rescued the animal and released it back into the wild.
CANFIELD When construction crews arrived at a new house in Canfield on Thursday morning, they weren’t expecting a surprise.
In the basement of a house being built on Village Boulevard was a fox.
Capt. Conner O’Halloran of the Cardinal Joint Fire District said the fire department was called after the construction company couldn’t lure the fox out with a ladder or 2-by-4s.

BEAVER An investigation in Beaver Township is underway to determine the cause of a Monday night house fire.
The township fire department responded to a call at 10:30 p.m. of a structure fire at 9528 New Buffalo Road, where fire Chief Larry Sauerwein said “a major renovation” process was underway.
The house will likely be a total loss, with at least 75 percent damaged from the fire, Sauerwein said Tuesday.
There were no injuries, and nothing suspicious is suspected at this time, he said.
The single-family house was more than 2,250 square feet and was built in 1989, according to the Mahoning County Auditor’s website.

HUBBARD Residents of the township and city are without their own ambulance service in the middle of a pandemic, and the fire district wants to change that, first by seeking advice from other joint fire districts.
The Eagle Joint Fire District will be contacting David “Chip” Comstock, chief of the Western Reserve Joint Fire District in Poland, to speak with him and Hubbard city and township officials on what needs to be done to get emergency medical service or ambulance service to the area. The Western Reserve Fire District represents Poland Village, Poland Township and Lowellville.
Hubbard Councilman Mike Kerr said at this week’s Eagle Joint Fire District board meeting he will get in touch with Comstock so he can explain what they have been doing for ambulance and EMS in his joint fire district in Mahoning County and what can be done to get the services in Hubbard. Kerr said the meeting will take place before the end of the year.
